Beautiful house hosts excellence in Cornish design
Thanks to the Le Grice Familly, the Cornwall Design Fair in association with Hidden Art returned to the glorious setting of Trereife House, August 21-22. In its fifth year, the Design Fair was a celebration of the quality and diversity of contemporary Cornish design in historic surroundings. Previous Design Fairs at Godolphin House were a first for Cornwall, annually attracting over 4,000 visitors from across the country.
The Cornwall Design Fair in association with Hidden Art presented contemporary design from designer-makers, with a wide range of furniture, interior products, ceramics, glass, lighting, jewellery, textiles and fashion accessories for sale. There was something for all the family, from individual designer-maker stalls filling three marquees to the Curated Design exhibition inside Trereife House, design-led games for children, live entertainment and incorporating the ‘Art of the Book’ literary festival, running throughout Penzance from the preceding Wednesday by the Society of Authors Penzance Chapter.
Participating Ceramic Artist and Potter Samme Charlesworth said “Trereife House is a most elegant ancestral home, one that reflects the old World elegance of the Queen Anne style. My style of work, Shabby Chic, rejects the new and shinny in favour of the battered and antique, something which is fundamentally English. Hidden Art at Trereife enjoys a link with a celebration of time having passed. Designer makers bring to it an atmosphere that is welcoming and rich.”
Curated Design at Trereife took place this year with site specific work from Hidden Art members being displayed in the historic rooms of Trereife House.
Hidden Art Curated was an exciting exhibition presenting contemporary design in an unusual context and this year Design Fair curators have selected work by 100 metres, Boquio Iron & Glass, JMG Ceramics, Jonathan Walter Fine Furniture, Pack, Remon Jephcott, and Samme Charlesworth all to re-furnish and transform the historic rooms of this ancient manor house Trereife House.
Events Manager, Rob Lewis, said “Curated Design was one of the highlights of last year’s Design Fair and we are grateful to the Le Grice family for opening up the house again for this exciting site specific curated show which has become very much part of the Design Fair.”
The Fair was set in the beautiful grounds of Trereife House the home of the Le Grice family since 1798 and steeped in history. Situated less than a mile west of Penzance with direct access from the main A30, and is proving to be a very popular venue for the Cornwall Design Fair.
