Interested in looking at practical ways to protect and maximise the value of what you own and grow your businesses? This is a great opportunity to talk this through with a panel of experts in a 1-2-1 session.

This 1-2-1 Session will help you understand:

  • What Intellectual Property rights you have in your name, designs, copyright and other intellectual assets,
  • If you are sufficiently protected or if not,
how you can protect them and
  • Ways in which you could seek to maximise their value.

IP and commercialisation specialists, Rob Looker, Christi Mitchell and Ben Williams (Highbury Ltd) know that designers design great products but that they are not always as careful in protecting what they have and also that they don’t also make the most of their names/brands, designs and copyright. The law and position is changing on designs and copyright especially and we can help you understand the changes and what it means to you and your business.

The sessions with Highbury are focused on you and your intellectual assets and on helping you make sure you know what you have, that it is or how it can be protected and where and how you seek to maximise its value.

Only a limited number of sessions are available. If you are interested please email dieneke@hiddenart.co.uk  with details on what you do and what key questions you would like answered.

You can register here on Eventbrite .

The deadline to register is Friday 21 March.
We will let you know by Monday 24th March whether you have been selected for a free 1-2-1 session.

Review of 1-2-1 Sessions Wednesday 19th February 2014

Christi Mitchell and Rob Looker of Highbury met with four Hidden Art ‘designers’ in short 1 hour sessions to discuss and advise on their next critical / immediate and future steps to protect their Intellectual Property and with one or two to talk about the potentiality of licensing and key steps in making that happen. In short, helping the designers to start to evolve and further develop their design protection and for some their commercialisation strategy.

Highbury Ltd is an independent business development consultancy working with a range of companies, universities, individual inventors, entrepreneurs, financiers and Social Enterprises.

They offer a combination of industry-specific expertise and skills designed to protect, value, manage and commercialise a range of technologies, products, intellectual property (IP) and other intellectual assets (IA) across the sciences and the creative arts.

Review

It proved a successful first IP session and the designs and IP discussed ranged from folding furniture, pattern designs, and clothing to bag adaptation and ergonomic children’s cutlery – some very innovative and well developed designs.

Some common themes came through the sessions:

  1. The use of Non Disclosure or Confidentiality Disclosure Agreements to afford the designers some protection in discussions or negotiations (with well qualified clients, customers and possible business partners).  Likewise being careful what information is given out and to whom.
  2. Strategic use of Registered Design Right –registration- in UK, EU (Community Design Rights) and wider afield (in particular – The US and China),  and that whilst you could do this yourself, particularly so in the UK, it would be wise to have some professional advice and support in putting together an application.
  3. That it is useful to have a clear vision of your market and where you are likely to promote, distribute or sell your designs/products and a good understanding of the design or trademark registration process and costs in the different countries. This helps you to establish your strategy and plan and manage risks. Many designers have limited funds and it is important to use those funds wisely and where it may give you the best protection and market impact.
  4. Trademarks are equally important and useful in not only protecting your name/brand but also in adding value to your business and establishing a brand. Again designers need to understand the costs and then be in the best position to make decisions on where to register and spend their funds on protecting their IP.

Feed-back

There was some very positive feed-back from those attending

“I appreciated the advice on how to get funding for paying for key registration.”

“I was given a sample confidentiality agreement which was very useful.”

“I now have a better understanding of what I should be doing to protect my work”.
