Creativeworks London is delighted to be hosting its 3rd Ideas Pool on the theme of ‘Localities and the creative industries: The right place at the right time.’
The Ideas Pool is an intensive morning aimed at bringing together academics and SMEs who have an interest in this theme and who may also be interested in applying for the 3rd round of Creativeworks London Creative Vouchers (also on this theme).
The aim of this particular Ideas Pool is to pin down exactly how ‘place matters’, why it matters, for whom, and in what circumstances, in the field of the creative economy. The purpose is to create a space in which to work collaboratively on the development of ideas that will, in turn, enable new partnerships of academics and SMEs to apply to the Creative Vouchers Scheme. The lead applicant will be the SME.
We are all familiar with the idea of ‘it all comes together at x’; where knowledge, expertise and talent come together in a specific place. The academic notion of ‘locality’ captures this: the unique combination of various networks and flows (e.g. of people, projects, ideas and finance) leading to special conditions that culminate in a nexus of activity at x. It is our common experience that place is somehow bound up with the practice of the creative economy yet this idea can also be difficult to precisely specify.
There is a growing body of research on the creative industries that acknowledges the relationship between place and creativity. The focus is almost entirely on creativity as a collective or social process and largely concentrates on creativity as a product of interactions within clusters of creative firms.
This event provides a timely opportunity to bring together current academic research with the experience and practical knowledge of SMEs, to begin to develop ideas to be submitted to the CWL Creative Vouchers Scheme (there will be a further application workshop to assist with the practicalities of this scheme and building effective research collaborations in w/c March 25th.)
Possible topics for discussion:
1. What are some of the benefits of locality for creative enterprises? Likewise what are some of the barriers to networks that exist in a specific locality?
2. What would facilitate a growth of networks based in place?
3. How important is an understanding of local identity in a place or neighbourhood or borough?
4. Can inspiration be acquired from a locality and if so how can that be expressed?
We look forward to welcoming both academics and SMEs – (Numbers are restricted to one representative per SME), if you wish to attend please reply to firstname.lastname@example.org, indicating which of the above discussion topics you would be most interested in joining.
Please RSVP by Tuesday 26th February.
