Saint- Etienne International Design Biennial

The 8th Saint-Etienne International Design Biennial will take place from 14th -31st of March, 2013. The principal theme of this edition is Empathy, or << experiencing the other >>. Designers, companies, professionals and students are invited to send their projects that explore modern design innovation in a new utopian society.

The 8th edition of the Biennial will be widely diffused in the Saint-Etienne region, and be open to all types of public. Based on innovation and strategic prospective through design, it will provide a stage for numerous international actions and actors.

The 2013 edition will open its doors with the springtime, and be relayed throughout the territory by associating numerous actors from the Saint-Etienne region. In keeping with its specificity the Biennial will bring professional actors and the general public together in a series of exhibitions, conferences, seminars and festive events around the city, in the different museums and at the Cité du Design on the site of Saint-Etienne’s former arms manufacture.

From its territorial base the Biennial will open up to international influences by inviting exhibitors and visitors from many different countries. It will promote the discovery of design as a key element in the development of cities, cultures and the economy, with a special emphasis on the cities of the UNESCO creative cities of design network, of which Saint-Etienne has been a member since November 2010.

With a strong emphasis on innovation, strategic prospective and research through design, the 2013 Saint-Etienne International Design Biennial will provide a stage for designers, students (including those from the Saint-Etienne Higher School of Art and Design), economic actors and institutions working on projects presenting concrete proposals for lifestyles linked to our present day and future uses.
