Gardens and Fair at Trereife House

By Dieneke Ferguson

This was the 7th Cornwall Design Fair which  again was being hosted at its now permanent home,  Trereife Park, Newlyn  in Cornwall.  The event  ran over 3 days from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th August , opening  from 11am – 6pm daily.

The Cornwall Design has come out of the Design Fair that was first run by Hidden Art Cornwall. Hidden Art Cornwall ran its first Design Fair in 2006 with 65 designer-makers, growing to over 80 in 2008 with an exhibition of selected work inside Godolphin House itself called Hidden Art Curated, as well as design-led entertainment for families.

In 2009 the first Cornwall Design Fair held in association with Hidden Art took place successfully at the inaugural fair at Trereife Park with fifty-one designer-makers. In 2011 seventy-four designer-makers booked in for the fair with over 3500 visitors.

The Cornwall Design Fair has grown in popularity over the years and is now a firm favourite with designer-makers and visitors alike.  This was the first year that it has been run without the involvement of Hidden Art

I visited the Fair over the Saturday and Sunday and stayed over in the marvellous B&B accommodation which is in Trereife House itself.

It was great to see familiar faces from previous events as well as new participants. As in previous year work from selected designers was exhibited throughout Trereife House itself, providing a nice addition to the antiques.Although the weather was mixed and there were periods of rain, those visiting the fair seemed to have an enjoyable time.

There were a range of workshops the public could choose from to unleash their creativity and try something new. A food market was selling an array of Cornish produce, there was music and a story teller for the children.

The surroundings were absolutely marvellous  near Trereife in the picturesque West of Cornwall.

My room was great, with a comfortable bed, and breakfast was served in one of the splendid rooms downstairs. Trereife House dates from the early 18th century when the major part was built.
